They say when you have kids you give birth to guilt.
I don’t think anyone among us could admit that they’ve never experienced Mom-guilt. It’s an inevitable part of human nature. I try to keep mine in check and remind myself that I’m doing my best, but sometimes it just creeps up. It can manifest as something small – like the other day when it was freezing in the car, and the heat hadn’t hit the backseat yet, but I was nice and comfy with my ass warmer set to high – or something hotter. Or, like feeling horrible for not tucking the kids in two nights in a row because of work. Some things are out of our control and to those let’s say “c’est la vie.” There are other things we can get our arms around.
I’m a redhead with sensitive skin, and I’ve been adamant about my skincare routine since middle school. I played a ton of outdoor sports and was always tried to be conscious about the sun, because I had to be.
Now, every night I wash, use a serum and put on a night cream. In the morning, I never leave the house without my sunscreen moisturizer. I’m adamant about it because I don’t want to look 60 when I’m 40. The other morning while I was rubbing it in thinking about how cold it was outside but that the sun’s rays can still be dangerous (because that is where my mind goes after thinking about world peace, the migration of whales, and God knows what else) I had a tinge of sudden Mom-guilt. I’m not nearly as adamant about my kid’s skincare routine as I am about my own. In fact, we have no children’s skincare routine. Sure we always lather up sunscreen in the Summer or on vacation, but not typically in the Winter, and we are outside all of the time! And I never thought to put anything on their little faces at night. I always admire their skin. It’s so perfect and elastic and well, new. Of course I want to do everything in my power to keep it that way. If I started my skin regimen back in the 90’s when I was young, why shouldn’t I start protecting their skin early too?
I had to find out if there was anything on the market that offered kids an early skincare routine without containing harsh chemicals. After I solved world peace, right? Enter DermalYouth. I’ve been having some in-depth conversations with this company’s founder. He’s answered all of my questions, and I’ve loved learning his passion for keeping kid’s skin safe. One of the most surprising facts I learned was that over 80% of skin damage occurs BEFORE A CHILD REACHES 18! Holy Mom-Guilt Central. DermalYouth is the world’s first one-of-a-kind breakthrough skincare product for children that delivers a one-two punch by extending children’s youthful appearance while protecting them from the heightened and preventable threat of skin cancers. It’s even backed by the Skin Cancer Foundation. I couldn’t be more excited to be a part of this launch and to share it with you.
We’ve now incorporated using these products before brushing our teeth in the morning and at night. It’s fun to watch my six year old take such pride in putting it on herself. We talk about the value of protecting our skin — and now I have zero Mom-guilt when thinking about her on the playground in the morning without protection and I even pat myself on the back a little for starting a skincare routine for her this early in life.
I want to chat a little bit about the ingredients because I’m a stickler about using natural products with the kids. There’s already so much crap they are exposed to beyond our control. I scrutinize every tube of sunscreen I buy. #MomGuilt. Scott, the CEO of this company, is even more of a stickler. I encourage you to check them out here, and I promise you won’t find anything nasty or synthetic. (Think – blueberry extract, cucumber melon extract, sweet almond oil, Shea butter – you probably shouldn’t eat it but it sounds delicious to this 9 month along pregnant-mama.) DermalYouth is giving away 1 free Children’s Skincare System Kit plus these goodies to a lucky MIM reader!
