ON THE EVE OF YOUR 5TH BIRTHDAY

Today you are 4, tomorrow you will be 5.

Will I remember the questions you asked when you were 4? Like what was your grandfather’s middle name? Where do babies come out? And why can’t you sit in the front seat?

Will I remember your 4 year old fears? Like bad guys, and fire, and being alone…

Will I remember the jokes you made when you were 4? Trying to convince me with a smirk that chocolate milk comes from brown horses or that saying “Poopsies-Pizza” isn’t using a bad word…

Will I remember your 4 year old firsts? Like learning how to swim alone or scoring 3 goals in your first official soccer game…

Will I remember that we loved looking for fairies and planting flowers together?

Will I remember that your 4 year old cheeks were impossibly soft? Or that your 4 year old hair was curly and wild? Will I remember that your 4 year old hands were covered in markers and when we took your shoes off, your 4 year old feet were caked in playground sand?

Will I remember that your legs looked strong and bruised?   Will I remember that your 4 year old mind was insightful and steadfast? Or that your 4 year old heart was kind and brave…

Tomorrow you will wake up and you will be 5.

You will laugh and discover, ask questions and make jokes.  I will kiss your soft cheeks and smell the scent of your skin in the morning.  I will attempt to put your curly, wild hair into a ponytail.  I’ll remind you to wash your hands and be nice to your brother.  Come nighttime I will spoon my body around yours and whisper in your ear that I love you more than anything.

And I will soak this all in……………….so that I will always, always remember.

Happy 5th Birthday, my love.
