WHAT’S (REALLY) IN MY HOSPITAL BAG

0 Permalink

First, let’s talk about the actual bag.  With every other birth I had either a utilitarian sports bag or a small suitcase packed both which made me feel like I was going on a work trip.  Screw that.  It’s my 3rd kid and I’m walking in with style.  “Excuse me, are you going to fashion week?” “Who ME?? Ohhh no, just headed in to deliver a baby…”

Chapstick.
So. Much. Chapstick. Because: So. Much. Breathing.  My go-to brand is Smith’s rosebud salve. No medicinal residue or taste just all natural pleasantries for your lips.  Put your husband on chapstick duty.

My Planner
{AKA My Life.}  I use the note section in the back to jot down things I don’t want to forget (the funny things – like when Hubby told me the hospital bracelet he had to wear was uncomfortable and pinched his arm hair.) Also, Decker’s favorite pen to make me smile.  Click on the words My Planner above for info on this Lilly Pulitzer gem.

Wine & Opener.
Look, I’m not partying up in there.  But after delivery – like a good solid 24 hours after – it’s nice to pour out a little bit of the forbidden fruit to toast all of your hard work.  Kind of like a “Well that sucked, but look what we got!” kind of Cheers.  Indulge in the dixie cup.  Just don’t make our mistake and forget an opener.  Hospitals tend to frown on you asking for a wine opener, go figure. {Click here for a picture of Hubby trying to open up our last Maternity Ward bottle with a shoe.}

My Jane
Did you know you don’t actually have to wear the hospital-administrated gown? They make me feel too much like a patient.  I don’t like the way they feel or smell or imagining other people wearing them.  “Get Jane’s” got us covered! Psst: These would make an adorable and unique baby shower gift.

Cuddle Blankie & Pillowcase
Yes I said cuddle blankie.  Yes I still have a cuddle blankie. Yes my kids try to steal it and my husband makes fun of me for it. Tip: It’s really nice to have your own favorite pillowcase in the maternity ward – veteran move.

Cute Headband
Not only is it handy to hold the fly away hair back while you do work, it looks great in photos after, just sayin.

Makeup Kit
To hold necessities (cell phone charger, toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, mascara, face wipes, etc.) I found the cutest kits at Target recently from one of my longtime favorite designers, Orla Kiely.

Baby Outfit, Granny Panties, Nursing Bra & Extra Maternity Clothes
Do yourself a favor and don’t expect to walk out of there in regular clothes.  I’ll embrace the elastic waistband for at least a month (or 2. or 3.) Also, I’ll save you the image here.

And lastly
Notes from my kids…

…to remind me why I’m doing this.
