TALES FROM THE BIND: CONFESSIONS OF A SERIAL SWADDLER (A MIM GUIDE)

I was inspired to write this post after hearing the sad news that Isis Parenting closed its doors.  Early parenting classes are crucial to helping new moms feel more confident not just by the lessons they learn but by the relationships they build.  New moms need something (anything) that gets them out of the house and around other new moms and babes.  It’s the only cure to help with the pretty standard feeling of isolation after giving birth.  I have a circle of friends from Isis that will be in my life forever.  We went through such an amazing, raw, real, mostly happy but sometimes sad time together and learned valuable pieces of information I still use to this day.

I think the most valuable lesson I learned at Isis was how to swaddle.  When I first had Miss P. (now 2.5yrs.), I was scared to death of the swaddle.  It looked weird and uncomfortable.  I said to myself “Nobody puts Baby in the Corner”  My precious child will have the freedom of flailing her arms and legs in any way she damn well pleases!  After weeks of sleep deprivation, I finally got over myself and embraced the swaddle.

Not every baby needs a swaddle.  Both of mine came out with eyes wide open moving every muscle in their tiny bodies.  It actually surprised and scared the crap out of me how alert they were.  This eventually becomes a fun trait in a baby…except when it’s time for them to sleep.  Babies with this temperament need the swaddle to calm down and then to stay down.   Adequate sleep equals a happy baby during “up” times.

Here’s my swaddle timeline and product recommendations:

0-3 Months: Bunny Ears & Mermaid Tails

Buy the ABC blanket and master the “Isis Swaddle.”  It mimics the womb exactly and babies love it (promise.)  When I first saw this I was a little nervous.  But once I learned how easy it became it literally changed my life.  Both of my newborns took great naps during the day and hence slept well (as well as expected) at night. I made a SUPER professional home video on how to do this so turn up the volume and hold on to your shorts: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SeFIK2HQlfA

3-6 Months: Wrap it Up

At this age they are probably strong enough to kick out of the ABC blankets so it’s time to upgrade to the Miracle Blanket, a swaddle that wraps around their body several times while holding their arms in a flat position on the inside.  I’ve had great success with this sucker and especially like that it’s so lightweight.  I’d  like to make it known here that I bought mine at Isis, (may they R.I.P.) because they recommended it to me and then taught me how to use it.  I didn’t take the recommendation they gave me and then go buy it on Amazon (ahem.)

6-9 Months: Baby Merlin’s Magic Sleep Suit – CLICK TO BUY

I’m proud to say that my Next Steps class at Isis helped put this company on the map.  After our group found them and fell in love, Isis brought it into all of their retail stores.   I love sharing this product with other moms. Although it looks absolutely ridiculous it works like an absolute charm.  Here’s a picture of Miss P. in a Magic Sleep Suit doing her best Michelin Man impression.  How peaceful can one 6 month old get?  I truly wish they made this suit in an adult size.  And as an added bonus, you can torture your kid with the pictures when they become teenagers.
