5 THINGS I LEARNED FROM MY 92 YEAR OLD GRANDFATHER

2 Permalink

Hosting Thanksgiving this year meant being in the presence of one of my favorite people: my 92 year old Grandfather.  Below are 5 things I’ve learned from him:

5.  Silence is OK.

This generation seems to be content with utter and complete silence (including mental quietness, too.)  No scrolling on social media, no mediocre small talk, no background football noise on the TV.  Just sitting. Thinking. Dozing.  Staring.  Somewhere along the way did we lose the ability to just be?  Being around him was a nice reminder that you don’t always have to fill the void…

4.  Family {really} matters.
We all know family matters.  But watch a 92 year old man become enamored with his 2 year old great grandson and you’ll realize time does nothing to the bond of a family bloodline.

3.  History.  {And perspective.}
Do you know what the early 1900’s mean to our kids? Absolutely nothing.  Except when your 4 year old gets to hear first-hand about having to sew your own pair of socks just to keep your feet warm at night.

2.  The Love Of The Game.
My Grandfather always had an extremely competitive spirit; he was an undefeated football coach with a field named after him where I graduated high school.  Here is a picture of him getting thrown into the local pond by his team after wining a championship – our version of the Gatorade dump.

1. Loyalty {And The Circle Of Life}
He lost the love of his life over 7 years ago today.  And to this day he can’t mention her without tearing up.  He hasn’t touched the towel she used to wrap her hair up in after a bath.  Her perfume still sits next to his cologne on the bathroom shelf.  He never spoke an ill word about her in the 36 years that I’ve known him.  She died on our wedding day in 2007 in the comfort of her own home holding her husbands hand.  And I know a day hasn’t gone by when he hasn’t thought of her.
