I’ve done a lot of work with Fidelity in spreading the word about college savings. I like this type of work because I know I’m helping families understand the value of saving early. When you are newly pregnant (or a new mom in general) the last thing you are thinking (or want to think) about is saving money – especially for your new born baby’s college tuition! You want to think about which stroller to buy or what nursery bedding matches your newly painted walls. Babies are expensive. You know what else is expensive? Life! When I lived on my own for the first time in New York City I inhabited a small 1 bedroom apartment with a girlfriend from college. We built a fake wall and split the “1 bedroom” into 2. The rent was obscene. I needed constant funding from my parents which didn’t feel great after graduating with a college degree. My paycheck went down to the pennies every 2 weeks after covering just basic living expenses. Saving was out of the question for me. Or so I thought until I met my financially-minded husband. Hubby is just good at saving. He always has been. He’s taught me a lot about it. And he’s always expressing the value of a 401K and reminding me how important it is to pay yourself first and to put money away whenever you can. (Pretty hot, right?) But that’s him, not all of us are built that way. In fact most of us like to spend the money we make instead of saving it (my hand is raised, is yours?) Enter Dobot. Dobot is like having a financially minded husband tucked into your back pocket at all times. It’s a brand new and free financial app. that helps you save money – but without even thinking about it. I like Dobot because they don’t make saving money sound scary or a big pain-in-the-you-know-what. They simply take the worry out so when you need money, the funds are there. Here’s how it works:
1.) You create a goal and set the dollar amount you’ll need
Example: Family Trip to Disney World, $2500, by December 31st.
2.) Connect your checking account to the app. and Dobot will determine your safe savings amount . It will then transfer a small amount of money each week.
3.) Be inspired. Along the way get helpful advice and encouragement via text and email to help you stay on track. Dobot actually makes it fun to save, who knew?
So what are you saving for?
A kids-free vacation? A yoga package? A visit to your favorite restaurant? Maybe even a new “I’m-not-having-any-more-kids” wardrobe? If you had an extra $3 maybe you’d treat yourself to a coffee. If you had an extra $300 maybe you’d take the kids to see the Rockettes. If you had an extra $40,000 maybe you’d move. The possibilities are endless.
