I grew up with big dogs. It’s all I ever knew. Small dogs (and cats, and birds, and lizards, and mice, and gerbils and fish) frighten me. It’s the unpredictability I can’t seem to wrap my brain around. At least with a large dog there are no sudden movements. You don’t get to decide if a cat wants to be on the table one minute and on your head the next. During lockdown we decided (along with the rest of the country) to get a dog. Why not? We were bored. We are home all day. What could go wrong? Because we like to go big or go home we got a Great Dane. We had friends growing up that always had two and both Sam I thought they were so majestic looking. Ripsaw “Rip” Madaket Quinn came to us from Maine with the most beautiful grey coat (“blue” if you are in the know). The kids named them after their favorite ski train and their favorite beach. Great Danes are known to be gentle giants, sweet, docile, dumb, and extremely loyal. We are talking Single White Female loyal. If you are a tall man with a beard “don’t come around here no more.” Oh, and something else about them? They completely take over your house, and your car, your furniture and your bed. They have no idea how large they are!
None of us really knew what to expect. The last time I had a dog, my Mom was the alpha and took care of all of them during my childhood. I had him trained via Zoom classes right away and quickly learned there was no place he’d rather be than by our sides. He was there for us when we needed him most, and he continues to be a source of our (much needed) smiles during the long days and unconditional love. It’s said that dogs have a way of finding the people that need them. Well we needed you, Rip. Thanks for joining our pack.
And speaking of packs! We cannot wait to catch the new show on Amazon Prime Video THE PACK, premiering tomorrow. In honor of the launch of this new series, Prime Video has created the ultimate celebration for dogs everywhere – and their humans too. It’s a global competition that celebrates the unrivaled bond between humans and dogs.
