College Costs How Much? And How I Lost My (Milk &) Cookies

Miss P. got to play hooky from school on Tuesday and accompany me to the Jimmy Fund Ice Cream Scooper Bowl at City Hall Plaza in Boston.  We took the commuter boat from Hingham to the downtown harbor in the pouring rain.  It’s typically filled with people going to work during that time and I quickly noticed she was the only child among 50 or so passengers.  As we settled into our seats next to a window I noticed the juxtaposition of the silently withdrawn business-suit clad crowd and my happy, curious, bubbling little girl.  She was smiling from ear to ear, asking questions and making some pretty insightful toddler conversation about the waves, birds, islands, and other boats we saw.  She’s ridden the boat a handful of times but her youthful curiosity didn’t let it get boring.  We talked about whose job it was to drive the boat and she told me she wanted to be a ballerina when she grew up.  I loved this special time spent connecting with her.  (And it’s truly amazing how kids can make you feel like a kid again yourself.)

When we got to the Jimmy Fund Scooper Bowl it was still raining and a little cold for June but we didn’t let that stop us from digging right in.  She opted for a “Jelly Donut” flavor and I opted to keep feeling like a kid with “Milk and Cookies.”  We headed over to the (covered!) U.Fund Dreams Tour Tent with ice cream in hand and had a lot of fun with the team there.  I learned that the average cost of a 4-year public, in-state degree in 2029 (her 1st year of college) is estimated to be $174,458.  My mouth dropped open and I might have lost my milk and cookies.  But hey, at least I know that since we save a little each month to a federal income tax deferred U.Fund we’re on the right path to making her dreams come true….

A little rain can’t hold us down!

We missed the target! (I was only slightly competitive about this.)
