In the mornings when I get my kids out of bed and kiss their soft cheeks still warm from sleep, I’ll feel the difference in weight from the day before and my heart sinks a little. Sometimes I’ll tease Miss P. and whisper: “Stop growing, stay my baby forever.” She’ll smile brightly and whisper back: “Don’t worry Mommy, I’ll never leave you.” But in reality and as harsh as it may sound, one of our most important jobs as parents is to prepare our kids to have the confidence and the means to leave the comfort of our homes. Luckily, my mother always tells me it ends up being one of the many joys; watching your child become a self-sufficient adult, doing what they love. All of your hard work and dedication pays off and you can finally sit back a little and enjoy.
As soon as I became pregnant with both kids, my husband started 529 plans for the kids specifically for their college funds. (We figured with the going rate for colleges these days, we better start in-utereo!) When Fidelity reached out and asked me to join in the U.Fund Dreams Tour I was so excited I knew about MEFA and gave myself a little pat on the back. The U.Fund Dreams Tour gives children the opportunity to learn about a variety of careers and pose for photos in scenes that represent what they might want to be when they grow up. I couldn’t get them out of the tent. (All three of ’em…)
We (finally) left the booth with this picture and piggy banks for the kids. They are both up on our mantel as a reminder that they can be whatever they want to be when they grow up. (Although I had to gently hint to Hubby he probably missed the boat on his career choice.) I loved being a part of this event and how it naturally got us talking about the future and the endless possibilites it holds for our kids.
