What color hair do your children have? This question is not so simple to me. What season is it? Has the Summer sun kissed it blonde or has the Winter sky dulled it brown? What day is it? Has she decided to brush it for school or was his hockey helmet matting it down? What time is it? Is it wet from a 30 minute chlorine filled swimming lesson or damp after a 20 minute bath? Have they eaten? Did half his yogurt get stuck in it? Has she been sucking on the ends of it? How do they feel? Do they have a fever or a cough? Where are they going? Are they standing in front of a white washed fence in search of 4 leaf clovers? Are they blending into the dried beach grass as they look for tadpoles?
All of this matters. All of this comes into play. The day and the time and the light and the circumstance. So for now I write Brunette. It’s not what I mean and it’s not what I see, but that doesn’t really bother me. I’m too busy reliving the moments that a simple question on a camp form has given me.
My daughter asked to read this post. After she read it I asked her what she thought and if she could she help me with a title. She paused and thoughtfully replied: “I like your story a lot but you need a little more detail….you should name it The Question – because you ask a lot of them!” 🙂
