Attention, Massachusetts! You no longer need a Passport to visit the Caribbean! Just head to Stone Zoo and immerse yourself in its new exhibit – The Caribbean Coast – a $4 million new entry habitat. Seamlessly integrated next to the new and improved Welcome Plaza, you’ll be able to hear the sounds, see the sights, and even touch the animals of the Caribbean. Read: This is the ONLY exhibit in New England where you can actually feed the flamingos!! My kids are so excited to come face to face with one of their favorite birds. (I’ll be there too, pretending not to be afraid, so I don’t scar them for life.)
The Caribbean Coast aims to further connect guests (of all ages!) to this region of the world. In addition to the Flamingos, the walk-thru aviary will feature scarlet ibis, macaws and Jamaican iguanas. Did you know this critically-endangered species was thought to be extinct for decades? They are the largest terrestrial vertebrate on Jamaica and can only be found in the tropical dry forests of Hellshire Hills near Kingston, Jamaica. Except you’ll get to meet one here, too! (And if you’re ever having a bad day – at least you don’t look like this guy?)
Do you know what a bush dog is? Despite its description, it actually isn’t a Lab that hides in your landscaping. They are very rare small mammals that can be found in extreme eastern Central America and northern South America. You’ll find a pair in the exhibit and make sure to check out their webbed feet which make them good swimmers!
DO NOT MISS the Calypso Trail where you’ll hear percussion instruments playing sounds of the Caribbean and be invited to mimic flamingo behavior at several yoga stations. What fun! While your kids are standing on one leg you’ll get a chance to teach the importance of behavioral adaptations.
Located right off the Calypso Trail, the Fiesta Gardens is an outdoor multi-use space that will be used for educational programming, special events and private rentals (next Birthday Party, anyone?)
Okay. I’M GOING TO THE ZOO, HOW ABOUT YOU!?
No really! You could win a family four pack to Zoo New England. Head over to my FB page, in the comments under this post write which animal you are the most excited to see: Flamingo, Iguana, or Bush Dog. Good luck!
