BEST JOB IN THE WORLD

1 Permalink

A couple of weeks ago I was having a glass of wine with one of my close friends over at her house. ¬†She’s older than me and a Mom of 7 for kids 25-6 years old (4 of her own, 3 step children.) Because of this, I tend to hang on her every word when it comes to parenting. ¬†She always gives the best insight and she’s pretty much seen it all. ¬†She was hugging¬†her youngest¬†tight to her chest¬†before the little girl was headed up to bed and as I watched the sweet embrace I said very softly “You’re her last one sweetie, you’re Mommy is never going to want to let go.” She¬†smiled up at me and kissed her Mother’s cheek. ¬†My friend muttered something into the back of her daughters hair, not necessarily to anyone, but the words made me heart stop:¬†“She’s not really mine, though. ¬†She’s just on loan.” I had to know more of what she was thinking. “Wait, what do you mean, she’s on loan?” I asked with a furrowed brow. ¬†The way she looked at me¬†then, I could tell she knew something I didn’t. ¬†It wasn’t that her expression was sarcastic or superior, it just looked experienced, thoughtful, even nostalgic. ¬†Wanting to¬†soften any blow her words may have given¬†me then¬†she quickly answered, “Kristin your kids will be yours forever, of course. ¬†But it’s not our job as parents to keep them or own them. ¬†It’s our job to guide them¬†to eventually become independent. ¬†It’s like a temporary loan, we have to set them free.” ¬†My God, she’s right, I thought. ¬†Our kids are on loan. ¬†They aren’t ours to “keep” forever. ¬†Of course they aren’t, I shook my head at my own thought, I knew that. ¬†But hearing it out loud from someone close to me who had already gone through it made it too real. ¬†Seeing the sadness in my eyes she looked¬†at me intensely and asked,
“How cool is it though?”
“What?” I reply, trying to get out of my funk.
She was excited now, using her hands “That we get to mold these beautiful souls. ¬†That we get to see all of our hard work put right into¬†action and see them off into the world. ¬†That journey is so cool.”
“It is really cool” I say with a smile.
“Best job in the world” she says to herself, leaning¬†back and taking another sip of wine.
And I know she’s earned it.
