TAKING A BITE OUT OF THE BIG APPLE

We took the kids to NYC last weekend.  Hubby and I used to live there – before dating, during dating, and while engaged.  At various times in our life we’ve lived in the Upper East Side, Midtown, Soho, and Chelsea.  We’ve worked all over.  We have a huge affinity for New York City and although it’s not the right place for us now, we both can picture ourselves coming back to it.  On Saturdays we used to walk the streets from Upper to Lower Manhattan stopping in bars and shops along the way.  We loved the sights, the sounds, even the smells.  We loved the grit and the grime and the inherit hustle in everyone’s step.  Walking NYC is the best way to enjoy it.  Our favorite is Soho – I remember our kitchen being so small it was impossible to cook so we’d try a new restaurant every night.  At bedtime, the screams from the bars below were so loud I never slept.  I remember missing that noise like crazy after we moved.  We had our favorite bar that served our favorite beer and our neighborhood homeless that stopped asking for money and started nodding to us, instead.  There is no other place like NYC in the world, it has a way of grabbing onto your soul and taking hold.  Naturally, we were pretty excited to share it with our kids for the first time.  In a little over 24 hours we gave them a whirlwind tour.  And just like the good ole days, we it seemed we never stopped walking.

Getting the car crazies out at the hotel…

Next up, the Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall.  They were SO GOOD. I’m kicking myself that I never got to see my friend perform in this show.  (See what I did there? Kicking….myself….) There’s my girl Jacey on the end!

We had to see the tree which hails from my small hometown in Upstate NY.  We took the kids ice skating after which is not easy to do 6 months pregnant with a splitting pelvic bone but hey – I am living to tell the story. (And it was worth it to see this girl’s smile.)  Ice Skating in the middle of Winter under skyscrapers is definitely an experience you don’t want to miss!

The kids were obsessed with graffiti.  (I kind of am too, is that weird?)  It was hard explaining that it was illegal to do it yet still considered an art form…I’m still working on how to explain that one and if I come up with something brilliant I’ll pass it along since I know you are all dying to figure this one out, too.

We ate dinner at The Sugar Factory.  OhMaGawd you guys. Please, check out this menu and discuss.  A kids dream.  A pregnant woman’s dream.  This place is a dream.  I’m drinking a virgin Watermelon Mojito that had just finished smoking but was still bubbling.  Send me a gurney.
A huge thank you to the staff for getting us in, reservations are nearly impossible to score!

Hubs and I love New York City diners.  The greasier the better.  One whiff and I’m taken back to hungover mornings laughing over chilled Bloody Marys and scrambled eggs.  It was a slightly different scene this morning but still just as delicious…

I like to think the love of window shopping is passed one from one generation to the next…

Although we generally try to avoid the touristy area of Times Square, we realized our kids were really first time tourists so we couldn’t miss taking the Subway up there.  ( You can’t tell but Hubby is wearing a Red Sox hat in this picture.  Is he asking for trouble? The last time I wore a Red Sox hat in NYC I was 23 at a bar and got punched in the face by a girl who was a die-hard Yankees fan.  But that’s a different story for a different blog!)
It’s the city that never sleeps – except if it’s 8 in the morning – so we essentially had the place to ourselves…

Don’t they look like they could bust out an Saturday Night Live rap duet at any moment?

The M&M headquarters store was a huge hit, naturally.  Might as well keep the sugar high going…
We are back home.  Back to water and veggies.  Back to sleeping in our own beds, and admiring our own Christmas Tree.  Part of the reason I like taking trips is to remember what you love about being home.

NYC you never disappoint. Until next time, old friend…
