TALES FROM A SWINGSET

0 Permalink

Backed by the generosity of both sets of grandparents we had a swing set delivered and set up in our yard yesterday.  The house we bought came with a 90 MPH pitching machine inside a batting cage which is about as useful as an inflatable dartboard with kids our age.  But swing set, there was not.  I dragged my feet on getting one because it was just such a big purchase and a big footprint and did we really need it?? I was still getting used to the fact that we had grass surrounding us – like real live grass without Bud Light cans and cigarettes mixed in from the night before.  I think our parents chipped in and encouraged us to get one because they both knew how important it was to our childhoods.  And they were right…

When I watched them run outside the basement door and onto the swings for the first time, I felt transported back to when my sisters and I would build forts in ours.  We’d make up games, spy on the neighbors, and even use it as down time for when we wanted to just sit, or swing, in peace.  I felt a sadness then, with a nostalgic longing for the past that quickly went away because it was my turn to be on pirate lookout duty so I had to concentrate, naturally.

When we walked back inside together I turned around and glanced at the looming structure.  I smiled to myself and gave a little nod to the past, reflecting on how life really can be cyclical..and oh so sweet.
