VACATION WAS…

Vacation was…

Forging strong bonds with the next generation of extended family members.  Finding them play in a totally different way.  Forcing yourself to break routine.  Applying sunscreen. Firsts. Feeling proud. Finally getting to check a mental box (swimming alone – check! Sigh.)

Vacation was…

Craziness. Calmness. Catching a minute alone then realizing you like the chaos better.  Comparing and contrasting.  Applying sunscreen. Cuddling and convincing. Cool dudes and camera shots.

Vacation was…

Winding up then winding down.  Watching your kids grow and change before your eyes.  Witnessing their joy.  Waging bets with your 9 year old nephew. Walking in the warm sun, trying to memorize it  long enough to last thru a Boston winter.  Applying sunscreen.  Washing through waves.  Wishing it would never end.

Vacation was…

Meeting another young family with a lovely daughter the same age as yours. Having fun in the pool with her and chatting about typical 4 year old things.  Noticing her parents matching purple bracelets.  Thinking they were nice people that seemed sad.  Having the Mother come up to you the next day to say she saw you on the Today Show that morning.  Friending her on Facebook.  Scrolling over her page and reading that they lost their 2 year old son (with a striking resemblance to your own) last month.  Wanting to see her again so that you could hug her until the pain stopped.  Realizing it probably never would.

Vacation was…

Heading home in the airport and waiting in the security line. Catching a young, handsome boy dressed in a military uniform saying goodbye to his parents.  Viscerally feeling the love between them and crying your own tears when the Mother fell into her husbands arms as her son passed through the gate.

Vacation was…

A reminder to count every single blessing you were given.

With the permission of his Mom, read about William “Willy” Heard’s story here and here.

Jamie & family: I will never forget you or the strength you both showed for your daughter. I do hope our paths cross again.
