WHAT’S IN YOUR KID’S SCHOOL LUNCH?

0 Permalink

Do you remember the food that came out of your school cafeteria? “Taco Day” meant the lunch ladies would be using ice cream scoops to dole out meat resembling dog food onto styrofoam plates.  “Pizza Day” signaled the end of the week where you’d try to get away with budging the line or playing “Heads for Heads” in order to get a slice that wasn’t 90% bread.  The grilled cheese was harder than the bricks that held up the building and the Sloppy Joe’s almost guaranteed you’d miss school the next day.  Fruit? Sure, soaked in syrup. Vegetables? Ketchup comes from tomatoes.  Eat The Rainbow? more like “Eating a MonoChromatic Rainy Day.”  There’s no question that good healthy fresh and minimally processed foods help our youth perform better and lead successful lives.  Growing healthy minds begins with fueling healthy bodies, especially at a young age.  One could argue there are more demands on our youth today and solid nutrition is even more important.  Also, I’d like to blame crappy school lunches on my inability to do 1st grade math, still.

So how do we get great tasting, nutritious meals that are still affordable to our schools?

Revolution Foods is leading the charge.  They are the healthy school meals provider for Boston Public School and remain committed to increasing capacity in order to serve an even larger set of schools in the region (Hello! Look Over here! *Waves Arms* Please!) Revolution Foods focuses on fresh, clean label ingredients with an emphasis on fruits and vegetables.  They do not use artificial colors, flavors, or sweeteners and instead source fresh local produce made daily with high quality proteins and rBST-free dairy products.  The company believes that providing Boston’s youth with proper nutrition will enable them to fulfill their academic potential and lead successful lives. They even started focusing on culturally relevant menu items to Boston schools, including bean and cheese pupusas, sweet potato-crusted fish sandwiches, and chicken drumsticks with rice and veggies.  Can I go back to school? (Fun fact – they created 80 new jobs in the area while doing it!)

So how did they do it?

Revolution Foods mastered a best-in-class supply chain that combines the best national brands with specialized local produce.  They are actually the only company on a national level to offer a clean-label supply chain (this shocked me) which enables them to offer high quality food.  The result? Chef-crafted, kid-inspired healthy meals at an affordable price that actually get eaten!  5.3 million to be exact.  Now excuse me while I email info@revolutionfoods.com and chat with the principle to try and get Revolution Foods in my own kid’s school…
